I think lighting, in my experience, is the most under-utilized and undervalued aspect of photography by those who aren’t in the photography industry. In each of my sessions, the first thing I like to know is how the light falls onto the location. With real estate and design photography, the lighting is fixed to the location of the house so creating a bright and natural look takes a little more creative thinking than a portrait session.
If you are thinking about having a photographer come in to create images of your home, let them know which direction most of your light comes from – where are most windows facing (is there a strong direct southern light, or evenly lit northern view?). This will help determine what time of day will give the most even light with softest shadows, and in my opinion the most flattering results.
